Victorian magic lantern showmen used a variety of illustrated message slides for starting a show, ‘Hello’ or ‘Welcome’ and ‘Goodbye’ or ‘Goodnight’ for closing it, plus ‘interval’ slides, notices to the audience, such as ‘Will ladies kindly remove their hats’ and seasonal ones, as above. These are known generically as motto slides and I will return to this subject in future posts, as they can be beautiful, funny and rather weird.
I’ve only been blogging for a few months but my posts have been viewed by thousands and liked by hundreds, for which I’m very grateful.
I hope you have a happy and peaceful New Year.
